Hey there y’all – I picked up a Goal Zero Boulder 100W briefcase with my REI dividend (and learning as I go). I discovered that I need a charge controller – which makes sense.

What I can’t figure out: can I use a 20amp charge controller with the 100W panel? (My thinking is: I’d rather spend and extra $30 to “future proof” in case I get another 100W of panel down the road.) And if it is not a good idea, and I should stick with the 10amp controller, what is the reasoning? (Is the 20amp simply not efficient with the lower wattage?)

Thanks all!

And what got me down this path
Goal Zero | 20 Amp Charge Controller

  • Designed to monitor and regulate solar input for 12V batteries. For solar charging with 100 watts and below, we recommend the 10 Amp Charge Controller. For solar charging with more than 100 watts, we recommend the 20 Amp Charge Controller.
