RMEF Shells Out $180,000 To Aid Elk Migration Research

One of the keys to preserving our natural resources, more specifically the four-legged ones, is understanding how they move. Migration patterns are key. Knowing where animals are going gives us insights into why they’re going there. Are they moving toward food? Are they moving away from predators or human developments? These are the questions that the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation is looking to answer. To that end, they have done what they do best. The RMEF has just committed $180,000 to help with elk migration research.

“The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation provided $180,000 in funding from its Torstenson Family Endowment to help continue critical elk migration corridor mapping across the West.

The grant to the University of Wyoming assists west-wide corridor mapping work, conducted collaboratively by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and western state wildlife agencies. The migration work is coordinated through the USGS Wyoming Cooperative Fish and Wildlife Research Unit, based on the campus in Laramie.”

Elk Migration Research

The Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation has given this grant to the University of Wyoming to assist with west-wide corridor mapping work. The mapping will be done alongside the U.S. Geological Survey, and aims to use mapping data to help our four-legged friends. In 2020, the team of biologists and researchers finished the first volume, which successfully mapped 42 migrations and nine winter ranges. This funding from the RMEF will be used to chart the migration patterns of 17 new elk herds.
