We built a sleeping platform for our ’12 Forester, already had a rooftop box, but wanted extra storage so I picked up an inexpensive standard hitch mounted carrier from harbor freight. This would be for hauling our cooler, firewood, storage bins, etc. Estimated cargo weight would be less than 150lbs, hitch is class II.. Not for daily use, maybe 2 or 3 times a month.

Pics here of sleeping platform, and cargo carrier installed

Would love to convert this to a passenger side swing mount, as cheaply but still as SAFELY as possible. The more I think about it, should I consider consulting a welding shop? Would welded hinges with an extension collar be a route to look into?

Thanks in advance, I’m a seasoned backpacker, but very new to this aspect of camping.
