There’s a batch of new blades arriving from Fox Knives – or, more specifically, their budget-oriented Black Fox label. Among the fresh faces is the Argus, a flipper knife that is the latest production design from Grigorii Matveev.

What we’re looking at with the Argus is a mid-sized folder, albeit a very sleek one. The narrow wharncliffe blade runs to 3.54-inches, made from D2 steel and given a nice full flat grind. You can probably sort this one into the appropriate use category right away: all-purpose slicing, dicing, etc., with that added length expanding the capabilities into some larger chores.

The edge profile itself hews closely to time-honoured everyday carry principles, but the actual shape around that edge, including the raised semi-harpoon swedge, give the Argus a lot of style without pushing into real avant-garde territory. Completely thumbstudless to preserve the aerodynamic profile, the Argus opens with a flipper tab and flipper tab alone.

The handle design follows a similar principle, keeping the underlying lines dead simple but imbuing them with a level of distinct visual refinement. The scales are contoured and made from either black G-10 or olive wood; in either configuration the lanyard loop/backspacer component is shown in an inline cutout on the handle, and anodized with a complimentary color. A non-reversible pocket clip is on the lock-side scale – and speaking of, the lock itself favors righties as it is a liner lock. In total it comes in nice and light at 2.65 oz.

Matveev is a Russian designer who has done work in the past with PMP Knives. He is actually the man behind all three of the new BlackFox knife designs, of which more anon.
