Blade Show West wrapped up over the weekend and, while the return of the show after its 2020 hiatus was good news indeed, it did not prove to be a hotbed of new knife announcements like some more established shows (not least of which is its eastern bigger brother, the original Blade Show). However a slew of awards were handed out in both the production and custom fields, highlighting some of the year’s best work so far.

It appears that these awards are decided in a similar fashion to those at Blade Show. According to the showrunners at Blade Magazine, “The Factory section was evaluated by a panel of undisclosed industry experts who judged the blades on a number of factors, including utility, design, creativity, materials and other traits. The Custom section was judged by a number of expert knifemakers along similar lines.” We were happy to see Bob Terzuola’s first collaboration with Civivi, the Tamashii, win big, and relative newcomer Monterey Bay Knives (a production label run by Ray Laconico and Sanford Owen) took home an accolade for the Slayback.
